How to Set User Permissions, Restrictions, and Other Controls

Prevent your users from seeing or managing certain information in WholeCell

Written by Brennan Zelener

When adding the members of your team to WholeCell, you'll want to set up their permissions so they can access what they need to do their jobs, and restrict access to the information you want to be kept private.

Setting User Permissions, and Restrictions

To adjust the permissions for a specific teammate, have an administrator go to their profile from the Users page and click on Permissions:

From the permissions page you can select what access profile you want for each kind of information in WholeCell.  The available profiles are:

Full Access (Read, Write, Delete)
Users will be able to view, edit, and delete the information in question.

Read + Write Only
Users will be able to view and edit the information, but will not be able to delete it.

No Access
Users will not be able to view, edit, or delete the information.  Pages will be hidden and table columns will be removed.

Here are the profiles that are currently supported for each information type:

Other Controls

The Profile tab contains several administrative controls that let you manage a user's account and improve account security.

  1. Click to Disable
Disables the user's access to WholeCell. The user will no longer be able to log in until their account is re-enabled.

  2. Force Password Reset
Forces the user to reset their password the next time they log in. This is useful if you believe an account may have been compromised or if you want the user to create a new password for security reasons.

  3. Log Out of All Sessions
Immediately signs the user out of WholeCell on all devices where they are currently logged in. This is useful if a device has been lost, shared, or you want to ensure the user signs in again with their credentials.

  4. Login Attempts
Displays the user's recent login history, including:

    • The date and time of each login attempt

    • The IP address used

    • The device or browser used

    • Whether the login attempt was successful

This information can be helpful when reviewing account activity or troubleshooting login issues.
